John 3:19—21
CONSIDER
In the story of creation we are told that ‘darkness was over the surface of the deep’ (Gen 1:1). Then God said, “Let there be light, and there was light”. (Gen 1:2).
In today’s world there is great spiritual darkness. Daily the media supplies us with a diet of wars and rumours of wars, deaths, assault and abuse – the list is long.
We need to remind ourselves that the antidote to such darkness is the light of the gospel.
Jesus describes Himself as ‘the light of the world’ (John 8:12) He describes us, His followers, as ‘the light of the world’ (Matt 5:14)
“I am the light of the world”. “You are the light of the world”.
Pause for a moment here, and think of these two statements. WOW!
Jesus, the sinless Son of God, claims for us, poor, damaged sinful human beings the same power as He claims for Himself? This is mind blowing, but it is fact! If we have invited Christ into our lives, it is His light that shines through us.
If a light is switched on in a dark room, the darkness disappears and can only return if the light is extinguished. This world of darkness needs our light to shine, no matter how dim and insignificant we may think it to be. Yours may be the only light in your situation at home, work or social interactions. A 40 watt bulb is better than no bulb at all, but a 100 watt bulb is useless if it is not connected to the power source. If our light is to shine we must have a continuous relationship with our power source — the Lord Jesus Christ.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I am your child.
Thank you, that in your infinite wisdom you have
Chosen me to be Your light in a dark world.
Forgive me for the things in my life that prevent Your light from shining through.
Please help me to shine for You.
Keep reminding me that Jesus wants to shine through me.
AMEN.
